30 Minus 2 Days of Writing (2013)
Day 14: “Where can I get a good blintz?”
“What can I get you, hon?”
“Coffee. Please.”
“Coming up.”
“Thanks.”
“Awake too long, or up too early?”
“Is it that obvious?”
“It’s always one or the other at this time of night. Can I get you anything else, hon?”
“No. Maybe. Where can I get a good blintz?”
“Only thing the kitchen knows how to make is pancakes.”
“Forget it.”
“Don’t blame you. The pancakes are louzy here.”
“How do you screw up pancakes?”
“I ask that question every night.”
“Life and it’s nagging mysteries, huh?”
“You said it, hon. Anything else for you?”
“More coffee, please.”
“Sure, I’ll top you off. It’s just a coffee and small talk kind of night.”
“Seems that way.”
“So, coffee at this hour, and no food. Got something on your mind?”
“Sometimes I just need a place to think.”
“How’s that thinking going for you?”
“I don’t know, I’ve mostly been talking.”
“Is that a hint?”
“No.”
“It’s Valentine’s Day, you know. There’s a whole day of it left once the sun comes up. You sure you don’t have somewhere else better to be, hon?”
“What could be better than sitting here talking to you?”
“Aw, you’re sweet.”
“And you have a nice smile. I like it when you call me ‘hon.'”
“Listen to you, sweet talker. You’re young enough to be my son.”
“And you’re old enough to love whomever you like.”
“Oh, so we’re in love now, are we?”
“Hopelessly. We’re inseparable.”
“I’m starting to wonder about where this thing between us is going, hon. Why don’t you ever take me to nice places anymore?”
“Because you don’t serve me coffee at those nice places.”
“Is that all I am to you anymore? A pair of hands to serve you coffee?”
“Well, there’s also your smile.”
“You big lug. You always know exactly what to say to win this old gal’s heart.”
“I’d surely ought to by now. We’ve known each other long enough.”
“More coffee?”
“How’d you know?”
“A woman always knows.”
“Ain’t love grand?”
“You said it, hon.”

A painful exercise in forced inspiration brought to you by
“We Work for Cheese“
Hey KZ! This was lovely – I’m a big ‘hon’ fan, too. I thought you’d blown it with the “Because you don’t serve me coffee at those nice places” line, but you rallied magnificently. But yeah, it’s Valentine’s Day; we all love ya, KZ. Indigo
Aw, I loved that story. Who knew you had it in you? Nice.
This is a really nice piece!
Awwww! What a beautiful, sweet story. Humor, sweetness, loneliness, hope and humanity all rolled into one. You’ve outdone yourself. I loved it! What a sweet Valentine gift!
What the hell is with Laughingmom’s avatar? Gross!
Nice little story. Though it’s a shame you couldn’t get a blintz. Or at least a decent pancake.
I just commented to see what avatar I got. Laughingmom’s avatar is being rude.
That was sweet – perfect for Valentine’s Day.
Awww, what a wonderful piece, KZ. I loved it. 🙂
Delightful! I don’t care if he is young enough to be her son… he won her heart! More coffee?
This is so sweet, I don’t even have a snarky comment to make. Stop it. 🙂
I think honey, hun, hon is my favorite thing to call people I love… or the kids who become good friends with my kids.
And coffee? You can NEVER have too much!
Sweet.
