30 Minus 2 Days of Writing (2014)
Day 5: “The empty bottle”
I was struggling with today’s writing prompt, so I decided to mine my old writing journal for something worthwhile. I came across something that I had drunkenly jotted down nearly ten years ago back when I was kid in my early twenties. I wrote it when I was at a party at a friend’s house where there were lots of people, plenty of beer, three guitars, and a joyful consensus of enthusiasm for group singing. I tend to get sentimental when I drink — and during those moments of shared joy, something moved me to commemorate the moment in the only way I knew how to.
The writing is a little rough and rambly, but it’s honest. I always intended to do something with this piece and expand upon it one day, but I just never got around to it. Well, with today’s writing prompt being what it is, I figured today was the best of all days to just put this out there so I could move on to Day 6.
I love the sound of a roomful of people passionately singing in unison, the collection of voices and breath swelling the air with warmth, a wave of empathy and faith in the majesty of shared moments, the synchronized rhythm of disparate hearts beating as a single collection of joyful commotion, measures of common humanity lilting atop a gust of unbridled passion, the outcry of gathered spirits. It stands as a testament to the depths of friendship, the love of a fleeting collection of moments, of unbridled celebration and sincerity. The greatest gift of all is the realization that there’s still reason for hope.
Here’s to the majesty of shared moments, my friends.

A painful exercise in forced inspiration brought to you by
“We Work for Cheese“
Maybe a little jumbled, but I like it. I’ve felt that feeling you’ve described, that sense of unity and being one with the universe. It’s an awesome feeling.
I appreciate it, Nicky.
By the way, I’m sure you’ve noticed, but Disqus doesn’t seem to be loading properly on anybody’s blog tonight. It’s frustrating, because I was just about to make my commenting rounds.
Bottles, friends and music… a winning combination!
You said it, Boom Boom. 🙂
I dig it, man. Well done. I always wanted to randomly journal like that — and never could. You should definitely share more of your past entries!
