The Insistence of Faith (Conversation with God Continued)

Posted on January 10, 2015January 2, 2023 by KZ

GOD: You fault me for my lack of intervention?

KEVIN: Of course.

GOD: Just a moment ago, you told me that God should let His children live their own lives.

KEVIN: In an ideal universe, even the most aloof and irresponsible deity would take at least some measures to stop his children from hating and killing each other…

Pub Talk

Posted on September 9, 2014October 15, 2022 by KZ

This is a conversation about Ben.

“Jesus, what motivates somebody to shoot himself in the head?”

“I suppose some people’s lives just suffer a deficit of meaning.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Exactly.”

“I’m about to shoot myself in the head if you keep that shit up.”

GOD: What reason do you have to despair?
KEVIN: Judging by the current state of the world, I think the answer to that question should be self-evident.

Day 2: “It was no accident”

What does it mean to be “eaten by a bear”? That seems like a relatively straightforward question at first glance, but there is a lot of nuance underlying the deceptive simplicity.

30 Minus 2 Days of Writing

Day 23: “Absurd”
________________________________________
Saturday afternoon, I found myself alone for the first time in what will soon be my new home. Up until that point, I had spent the better part of the day working with my father and a hired construction crew on a massive house remodeling project. By four o’clock, my father and the crew had left for the day, but I decided to stay a little longer because there were still hundreds of staples left to remove from the kitchen floorboard where linoleum once rested on top of particle wood.

This is a love story borne of coffee, compassion, fatigue, and dry humor. There’s also something in there about blintzes.

Day 6: “Haven”

KEVIN: I wish you would just give me a straight answer.

GOD: About what?

KEVIN: Well, about most things. About anything. Why does every conversation with you feel like a game of theological dodge ball?

Death stood alone, watching the wheat dance in the wind. Of course, it was only a metaphor. People were more than corn. They whirled through tiny crowded lives, driven literally by clock work, filling their days from edge to edge with the sheer effort of living. And all lives were exactly the same length. Even the very long and very short ones. From the point of view of eternity, anyway. Somewhere, the tiny voice of Bill Door said: from the point of view of the owner, longer ones are best.~Terry PratchettSource: Reaper Man
