…It Figures, Not Much

Posted on August 2, 2012October 12, 2022 by KZ

“How’s work?” “What do you do for a living?” Those are the two most common questions I hear in social settings whenever people want to engage me in conversation. I guess that’s the only thing left for adults to talk about once the idealism of youth fades away, and all traces of hopes and dreams…

Maybe My Verses Ain’t That Free

Posted on November 18, 2011October 11, 2022 by KZ

It feels like there’s no room left for poetry in my life these days. I’ve been living too long as a responsible adult — working long hours, paying my bills on time, and falling asleep earlier than I often plan to because I’m just so damned tired most nights of the week. The potential for…

Shuffle & Groan

Posted on September 27, 2011October 11, 2022 by KZ

Last Saturday, I drove out to one of my favorite paintball fields to run a few drills, and to fit in a few practice games in preparation for an upcoming paintball tournament on October 1st. Like an idiot, I went out and played hard without stretching properly, and I ended up pulling my hamstring. If…

Begone, Ye Scurvy Blahs!

Posted on April 14, 2011October 11, 2022 by KZ

So you remember that case of the blahs I was telling you about a while ago? I think we can consider that a thing of the past. I just got promoted at work this afternoon, and this weekend, I’m going to Disneyland. Booyah. By the way, if you happen to be a burglar or a…

The Fuzzy Orange Ass of Infinity

Posted on March 4, 2011October 11, 2022 by KZ

I guess you could call it a case of the blahs. Or maybe you could call it a crisis of confidence, although I’ve never seemed to suffer from an overabundance of confidence to begin with. Maybe I’ve just lost my mojo like Austin Powers did in that Mike Meyers movie — the name of which…

KZ Gets Physical

Posted on November 29, 2010October 11, 2022 by KZ

I caught a terrible cold over the Thanksgiving weekend. My shoulders and back muscles are suffering through a familiar soreness, the kind of pain you would normally feel the day after a hard workout at the gym. Sometimes I’ll feel cold, and sometimes I’ll need to open all of the windows in the apartment in…

Once I’ve Finished

Posted on November 18, 2010October 11, 2022 by KZ

Have you ever had one of those dry spells as a blogger where you lose your creative will for half a month because you’re coming home exhausted from work every night, too tired and depressed to write anything worthwhile? Yeah, me neither. On a completely unrelated note, I haven’t written anything new over the past…

This Writing Thing is Harder than it Looks

Posted on October 14, 2010October 11, 2022 by KZ

One of the earliest lessons that I learned as an aspiring writer is that the key to writing well is never losing your nerve. Although writers are separated from their audiences by distances of time, proofreading, and revisions, there is an undeniable element of performance in the act of writing which can make a writer…

So How’s That Novel Coming Along?

Posted on March 30, 2010October 11, 2022 by KZ

Call it a crisis of confidence, but sometimes I wonder what all of these writing aspirations of mine are really worth. It’s just easier to let somebody else say it for you. Everything has already been written. Anything significant has already been said. That all happened much longer ago than most of us suspect. So…

I’d Be More Apathetic if I Weren’t So Lethargic

Posted on January 6, 2010October 11, 2022 by KZ

Honestly, I get it. But then again, I kind of don’t. Why do people always wait until the 1st of January before they initiate all of those lofty, life-altering projects of radical self improvement? I’ve never believed in making new year’s resolutions because I’ve never viewed the start of a new year as a monumental…

Death stood alone, watching the wheat dance in the wind. Of course, it was only a metaphor. People were more than corn. They whirled through tiny crowded lives, driven literally by clock work, filling their days from edge to edge with the sheer effort of living. And all lives were exactly the same length. Even the very long and very short ones. From the point of view of eternity, anyway. Somewhere, the tiny voice of Bill Door said: from the point of view of the owner, longer ones are best.~Terry PratchettSource: Reaper Man
